The Victorian window glazing discount

How the VEU discount is worked out, who can claim it, and why the number in an advertisement may not match your quote.

The short answer

Victorian Energy Upgrades takes up to $210 per 10 m² off the cost of double glazing. It is for homes and most businesses with single-glazed windows, it needs approved products only, and renters are eligible. The discount is applied by the installer, and the price you pay afterwards is set by your accredited provider.

How the VEU glazing discount reaches you: a single-glazed home chooses an approved product, an accredited provider quotes with the discount included, and you pay the balance. How much is it on a real job?

The program publishes a rate by area rather than a figure per house, so the size of your glazing decides it. The chart below scales the published rate pro rata. The program page does not say how part areas are handled, so treat these as a guide and ask the provider to show the calculation.

Discount at the published rate, by glazing area

Discount at the published rate, by glazing area Bars showing the VEU window glazing discount scaled pro rata from the published rate of up to $210 per 10 square metres: $105 at 5 square metres, $210 at 10, $315 at 15, $420 at 20 and $525 at 25. $0 $200 $400 $600 5 m² of glazing $105 10 m² of glazing $210 15 m² of glazing $315 20 m² of glazing $420 25 m² of glazing $525

For a sense of scale, the eight-window Melbourne home in our Melbourne guide has 14.4 m² of glass, which comes to about $302 at the full rate. Useful, and a long way short of paying for the job.

Who qualifies?

  • Victorian households and most businesses with single-glazed windows.
  • Renters as well as owners: renters are eligible, though landlord permission may be needed.
  • Work using approved products only, taken from the program's register.

What if an advertisement promises a much bigger discount?

Ask what it is made of. The rate the program publishes is up to $210 per 10 m². A larger headline figure is usually a provider's total for a specific job, and it may fold in other work. The fix is simple: ask for the VEU discount as its own line on the quote, with the glazing area it was worked out from. If a provider will not show that, you cannot check it.

Weather sealing is worth up to $700, and insulation is up to $1,482 from 1 October 2026, with a minimum customer contribution of $200. Each activity has its own conditions on the program's pages. Sealing gaps around the windows you already have is the cheapest of the three, and it is the one landlords will meet again as a rental standard.

How do you claim it?

  1. Check the windows you are replacing are single glazed.
  2. Find an accredited provider and ask for a product on the VEU register.
  3. Ask for the discount to appear as its own line on the written quote.
  4. Pay the balance. There is nothing to lodge afterwards, because the provider handles the certificates.

Eligibility is decided by the program, not by us. Check the current rules on the Victorian Energy Upgrades page linked in the sources before you sign anything.
